The word BGM, written as "背景音乐 (bèi jǐng yīn yuè)" in Simplified Chinese, is a compound word consisting of two Chinese words background "背景 (bèi jǐng)" and music "音乐 (yīn yuè)".  The character "背 (bèi)" of the first Chinese word means the back part of a human being or an object, while another character "景 (jǐng)" of the word here means the conditions although it is understood as scenery in common. Hence, the word "背景 (bèi jǐng)" refers to something working in the background.

However, the Chinese word "背景 (bèi jǐng)" is a polysemy which implies different meanings upon the context. In some cases, if a man was described with the word "背景 (bèi jǐng)", such as "这个人很有背景", it probably implied that the man has a strong and powerful background.

The Chinese characters appearing in another word "音乐 (yīn yuè)" are both referring to the music with a slight difference. The first character "音 (yīn)" not only means the music but also indicates the sound or pronunciation varying from pitch to tone.
