? WHAT DOES "CALENDAR" MEAN IN CHINESE?

The Word Calendar is written as “日历 (rì lì)” in Simplified Chinese. The first Chinese character “日 (rì)” is one of the most commonly used words, with meanings of the sun, some date, the daytime, or period in Chinese depending on the context. For example, to say the first day of January in Chinese, it’s written as “一月一日 (yī yuè yì rì)” which is also known as the day of traditional Chinese festival “元旦 (yuán dàn)“. Furthermore, to say diary in Chinese, we could translate it into the Chinese word “日记 (rì jì)” which indicates the term’s definition and meaning of recording something daily.

The second Chinese character “历 (lì)” appearing in the Chinese word for Calendar “日历 (rì lì)” means the calendric system to reckon years, months, days, and seasonal points (such as China’s 24 Solar Terms) according to astronomical phenomena in China. What’s more, the character of “历 (lì)” also refers to all previous time experienced, such as history in Chinese “历史 (lì shǐ)“.

Chinese calendar, especially the China Lunar Calendar, plays a big role in Chinese culture and traditions. Chinese Lunar Calendar, also called “Traditional Chinese Calendar” or “Chinese Agricultural Calendar” is so important that it still designates the dates of almost all traditional Chinese festivals at present, such as the day of Chinese Dragon Boat Festival, the Mid-Autumn Day, and the most important day of Chinese Spring Festival of each year. Furthermore, the Chinese Lunar Calendar also makes a great impact on people’s living, weddings, funerals, moving/ traveling, business, and more activities.
