What is Meituan-Dianping in China?

Meituan-Dianping is a Chinese tech company providing online group buying with coupons and locally found food delivery, tour, and other life entertainment service.

Initially, it was just a Chinese version of website providing various ultra-low discount and group buying service to local Chinese people.

Now it has become one of Top three China’s largest online food ordering and food delivery providers after its launching of Meituan Food Delivery & Take-out service since November 2013.

The current name of Meituan-Dianping is generated after the combination of two platforms Meituan (Chinese’s Groupon) and Da Zhong Dian Ping (China’s most popular review & rating app on local food and search) since October 8, 2015.

After the merger, then it debuted and was listed on the Hong Kong stock exchange on September 20, 2018.

It also bought China’s famous bike-sharing company Mobike and became its owner in June of 2018.

Now in China, Meituan-Dianping and the other two Chinese tech companies “Jinri Toutiao ” and “DiDi” are collectively referred to as China’s “TMD” (T=Toutiao, M=Meituan-Dianping, D=DiDi).

Three companies of TMD were born in 2012, 2010, and 2012 respectively, which are in the midst of the boom of China’s mobile Internet market, well corresponding with China’s Top three tech giants “BAT” (B=Baidu, A=Alibaba, T=Tencent).

Latest Statistics of Meituan-Dianping

And from Meituan-Dianping’s latest 18Q4 financial report, its transaction amount spent on Meituan-Dianping’s platform in 2018 has increased by 44.3% to reach 515.6 billion yuan (Chinese RMB).

Among them, the dining and food take-out consumption amount has grown to 282.8 billion yuan by 65.3% increased.

Until the end of December 2018, the number of transaction members has broken through 400 million, by 29.3% increased.

The active restaurant and retail store partners also increased to 5.8 million by 32.1% increased, surpassing previous year (4.4 million).

On the user side, according to its prospectus in September 2018, the total number of Meituan-Dianping’s monthly active users in April 2018 was 290 million, a slight increase of about 1 million from the 289 million in December 2017.

It means Meituan-Dianping has already become the top one Chinese food delivery service provider and will continue to lead the Chinese food take-out market in 2019.

According to the Internet’s third-party data agency DCCI’s China’s first Food Take-out Industry Report 2019, it tells that the market share of Meituan Food Delivery has reached 64.1% in China (December 2018 updated).

About Meituan Platform & Its App initially was originally a platform to offer online group purchase service and coupons, and then have started its online food ordering and local delivery business, tour, and other lifestyle entertainment discount service since 2013.

Its Meituan Food Delivery business has occupied the largest market share of China’s food delivery industry, and become one of the top three big food delivery service providers in China.

In October 2015, merged with (China’s most popular review & rating tool on local food and search) and changed its name to “Meituan-Dianping”.

On April 2018, Meituan-Dianping has acquired Mobile, China’s largest bike-sharing firm.

On September 20, 2018, Meituan-Dianping started trading and listed its shares on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX).

According to third-party data, as of December 2017, the number of Meituan’s daily active users (DAU)  (excluding Dianping’s data) reached 29.991 million, and the number of its monthly active users reached 127.729 million.

About Dianping Platform & Its App, established in Shanghai city of China in April 2003, is the largest city living & consumption guide website in China, as well as  China’s most popular review & rating app on local food restaurant, lifestyle and entertainment search.

It supports users’ rating and reviewing on local restaurants, stores, other lifestyle entertainment consumptions as its main business model.

It not only provides users various local merchant information, and also helps users locate the nearby restaurants and services through the GPS positioning technology.

The hundreds of millions of third-party users’ rating and review contents are the core assets of Dianping platform.

On October 8, 2015, is merged with to form a new company named with “Meituan-Dianping”.

According to official data, as of the second quarter of 2017, the cumulative number of Dazhong dianping’s independent users exceeded 590 million, the monthly active users of its App exceeded 250 million, and as well as its over 250 million reviews and over 30 million merchants’ information.

The information in Dianping platform and its app has covered more than 2,500 China cities, and almost 1000 global cities in over 200 countries and regions all over the world, including the United States, Japan, France, Australia, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia, Maldives, Mauritius, etc.

Dazhong dianping has 22 billion monthly page views, over 90% of which are coming from mobile clients.
