Meituan-Dianping is a Chinese tech company. It offers online group buying with coupons and locally found food delivery, tour and other life entertainment service.

In the beginning, it only provides various ultra-low discount and group buying service to the local Chinese, like Groupon.com does to the western.

最初它只是一家提供各类超低本地折扣团购的中国版的Groupon团购网站。

Now it has become one of China’s top three largest online food ordering and food take-out providers after the launching of Meituan's Food Delivery & Take-out service since the November in 2013.

How Is Meituan-Dianping Formed?

The name of Meituan-Dianping is updated due to the combination of two platforms Meituan (Chinese’s Groupon) and Da Zhong Dian Ping (China’s most popular review & rating app on local food and search) since October 8, 2015. After the merger, it quickly debuted and got listed on the Hong Kong stock exchange on September 20, 2018.

美团点评是 2015 年 10 月 8 日经两家平台“美团网”和“大众点评”合并后改为现在的名字。合并后,于2018 年 9 月 20 日在香港联交所上市。

From June 2018, Meituan-Dianping has bought China’s famous bike-sharing company Mobike and became its owner.

2018 年 6 月通过对摩拜单车的收购,美团点评现在已成为摩拜单车的正式拥有者。

Due to years of development in China, Meituan-Dianping, with other two famous China tech companies "Jinri Toutiao" and "DiDi", together, are collectively known as China’s TMD. Here T represents short name of tech company Toutiao, M for Meituan-Dianping and D for DiDi.

As Meituan-Dianping’s 18Q4 financial report revealed, the transaction amount spent on Meituan-Dianping platform in 2018 has reached 515.6 billion yuan (CNY), increased by 44.3%. Among them, the dining and food take-out consumption amount has grown to 282.8 billion yuan by 65.3% increased.

据美团点评 18Q4 最新财报显示,2018 年美团点评平台交易金额上升44.3%,达到5156亿元,其中餐饮外卖交易额2828亿元,上涨65.3%。

As of the December in 2018, the total of its transaction members has broken through 400 million, by 29.3% increased. On the other hand, the active restaurant and retail store partners also increased to 5.8 million, by 32.1% increased. Obviously, the data surpassed the figure of 4.4 million in previous year.

截止到 2018 年 12 月底,美团交易用户数上涨 29.3%,突破 4 亿大关。合作的活跃商家则上涨 32.1%,已达到 580 万,超过 2017 年底的 440 万。

Furthermore, referring to the user side, the monthly active users of Meituan-Dianping reached 290 million as of the April of 2018. It caused a slight increase of about 1 million from the 289 million in December of 2017, revealed by its prospectus.

用户方面,据 2018 年 9 月其招股书显示,截至 2018 年 4 月美团月活跃用户数为 2.9 亿,较 2017 年 12 月的 2.89 亿小幅增长约 100 万。

Dianping allows users to submit ratings and reviews on local restaurants, stores, other lifestyle entertainment consumptions, as its main business model.

支持用户对本地餐馆、商店及各类生活娱乐消费服务进行评分和评价,是大众点评的主要商业模式。

It not only provides users various local merchant information, and also helps users locate the nearby restaurants and services through the GPS positioning technology.
